Presently, I just graduated from college with flying colors and that made both of my parents so proud and happy. Basically, college seemed like a roller coaster ride for me but the entire journey was a one of a kind experience. I have encountered so many difficulties along the way and they made me lose a grip of myself at times but I tried to hold and successfully, I was able to surpass everything. Days from now, I will be looking for job opportunities in different structural engineering companies for whatever position they can give me as long as it is related to my field.
As a structural engineering graduate, I am interested in designing buildings, bridges, roads, machineries, vehicles, equipments and other tools. I am responsible mostly for the analysis and designing of these structures and whatever items. In high school, I excelled in Physics and that made me take up this course. Everything just went well from then on although I must admit that there were times when things just did not go the way I wanted them to be but it no longer matters now.
I am quite aware that employment opportunities are limited nowadays but I am hoping to land a job as soon as possible in some reputable structural engineering companies perhaps. I believe that if I can make it there, I can develop myself more professionally. That is my ultimate dream but I am not aspiring to land a very big offer immediately. I know it is a lot of hard work so I will grab even lower positions first and it is up to me to turn that chance into something big. Nobody starts big instantly unless you are a very lucky person and you do not need to work hard to get what you want. In my case, I have to.
Everything that has happened to me is a wonderful blessing that I will forever be thankful for. Right now, I am not saying no to anything and I will always remain positive. This is the real world and I have to prepare myself for new discoveries and more twists and turns in my life and make each day more meaningful. I believe that I can make it through and that days from now, I will receive a call surprising me with good news that I am already hired in one of the best structural engineering companies in the country.

I am studying Mechanical Engineering in Brisbane with the aim of working in the space area (NASA). I am currently on a work contract (summer breaks) doing 51 hours this last week (32 next). I work in Brisbane and only have to drive back to the coast each day.
There is plenty of work once you complete 2 full engineering university years. I have a mate who is doing the same specialisation as myself and is focusing on the Mines in western Qld.
If you want to live in metro areas I would say civil has the higher salary however, mining engineering has been well documented to be very much in demand.. Aircraft mechanics are responsible for ensuring that planes are flying in top operating condition. They do this in a variety of ways: by performing scheduled maintenance, doing repairs, and conducting inspections as required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Mechanics usually work in hangars although they are occasionally required to work outdoors. Ear protection is required due to noise and vibration when testing engines. There is frequent lifting of heavy objects and a good deal of awkward or precarious positioning required when working. Although a 40-hour work week is common, aircraft mechanics can frequently count on overtime and/or weekend work. The job can be somewhat stressful due to the high level of responsibility to maintain safety standards and the time pressure to meet flight schedules.
Education, Certification, Licensing
Due to the high degree of responsibility associated with the job, the FAA requires that all aircraft mechanics be certified. In order to become certified, a person needs 18 months of practical experience with either power plants or airframes; or (to earn a combined certification as both an airframe and a powerplant mechanic, known as an A&P certificate) 30 months of practical experience working on both at the same time. Completion of a program at an FAA-certified mechanic school can be substituted for the work experience requirement. Mechanics also must pass an exam for certification, which has a combination of written, oral, and practical test components. Once certified, mechanics must take at least 16 hours of training every two years to keep their certificate current. There are presently about 170 schools certified by the FAA. Coursework normally lasts from 18 to 24 months and the schools are required by law to offer students a minimum of 1,900 class hours. Many of these schools award 2-year and 4-year degrees in avionics, aviation technology, or aviation maintenance management. Courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, electronics, computer science, and mechanical drawing are helpful because knowledge of the principles taught in these subjects is often needed to make repairs. A strong background in electronics is especially important. I want to major in mechnical engineering with a minor in automotive repair or something. I want to get my major in mechanical engineering and try to get a job with Ford or GM. Would a mechanical engineering degree allow me to work for Ford as an engineer. Or what kind of companies would a mechanical engineer work for?
Well, I'm a senior Mechanical Engineer and am currently interning for my third term, so I have some personal experience of what Mech. Engineers can do. I am currently working in an industrial plant that makes plastic beads that other companies buy and mold into different things. The main thing I do is asset reliability. Basically, I make sure that equipment in the plant is working properly. If not I have to come up with a plan to either improve what is there or suggest buying new equipment. I have to take into consideration safety aspects, costs, how it affects the process, etc.
There are many other things Mech. Engineers can do at work. Here are some examples that I have from friends who have interned or are currently working:
- You can work in transportation (cars, planes, and even helicopter), creating new designs or improving old ones. You can also do testing on vehicles for their wear and reliability - You can work in an office building, creating drafts and technical drawings for equipment. - You can end up teaching Mech. Engineering classes in a University. - You can design certain things (for example file cabinets) and test the durability of that design by attempting to destroy it. - You can work in a plant that produces industrail pumps and sell/inform other plants about various products. It's harder than it sounds, because you have to be very knowledgable in knowing exactly what type of equipment that plant needs, as well as helping out with any troubleshooting that may occur. - You can work do research in specialized fields. For example, researching crystallography will help find the best materials to use in different applications. - You can work in power plants and nuclear plants. You can be an asset reliabity engineer at those plants. You can also be a process engineer, basically they know the process of the plant inside and out, and can help with any engineering projects.
That's just some of the things I can think of, but as you can tell, there are many different things you can do, and there will always be a need for mechanical engineering.

Im a site engineer for a large construction company in the UK. You can go down this career path by completing a degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering for large construction companies, and there are less demanding courses to get a start with smaller companies i.e. setting-out courses etc.
Its an interesting and challenging career path to go down. Each day revolves around dealing with technical problems and coming up with the solutions. Due to the complexity and diversity of the construction industry, every day is different and no two projects will be the same...which keeps it interesting. You will also be mostly site based with a little office work to do, which means that your not stuck indoors all the time.
Site engineering generally involves a large part of setting-out, which means taking the design from drawings and marking it out on the ground. You must then monitor the construction to make sure it is being built correctly. You must also monitor progress and make sure it is completed within the time frame (making sure you have adequate resources). So there is a large element of management also. Everything has to be documented for quality assurance reasons so you will be responsible for all kinds of records keeping. You will also have a large part to play towards health and safety as engineers are probably the most site based members of the team...and trust me, that's a job in itself (construction is the 2nd of all industries for the most fatalities and injuries each year; 2nd to agriculture)
For this career, you need a good technical mind, some management skills and you need to be assertive...nearly aggressive. It is a very fast paced job. The pay is well, but you will probably be working long hours, at the very least 50hrs a week. If you have the above skills you will enjoy it though, and like I said earlier, it is a very interesting job.
You can progress in you career to project management and contract management, and you can even branch off into structural, design, environmental engineering...there are loads.

Yes, most likely you will have better job opportunities if you learn MATLAB. . Not sure how many computer languages you know now, but I found that learning different languages are important even if you dont use them all.
Matlab is one of the more popular of the languages used in engineering. .
If you already know at least one programming language and have either some linear algerba or matrix theory you should have no problem with it.
The toolkits and the use of vector processing can make the development of prototype code easy.

I'm going to an engineering job fair at my school. I have a general cover letter, but I was wondering if I should bring it to the job fair. Most of the companies have so many people coming that I doubt they will have time (or want to) actually read a cover letter.
Should I give them my resume and cover letter when they ask for my resume or just give them my resume only?
It's always been my understanding that cover letters are supposed to be tailored to the job you seek, so I don't really see the point of a general cover letter...it couldn't hurt, but I doubt it'll help.
