Anyone know of a good blueprint desiging software that I can also form layouts of wiring, such as wiring coaxial electrical and other things.
Needs to be free, and be downloadable and usable without internet connection.
I'm redesigning the wiring of an existing house that is 40-50 years of age.

I am currently studying Electrical Engineering at McGill University, however, I needed to take a computer class and because of that I now realize that I am really starting to enjoy programming. My debate is now whether to switch to software engineering or to stick to electrical. Note: I don't mind electrical engineering. I am really liking my programming class (JAVA). It is my first year. It is very easy to switch between software, electrical (and computer also) engineering because they are all in the same department (also especially since its my first year).
My real problem here is that I hear people saying that an Electrical engineer has the opportunity to do a Software engineer's job, but not vice-versa.
Help is highly appreciated!
Get a degree in electrical and start looking into programming.
I'll be honest, Java is nothing like other languages, and, in my opinion, it's the worst language available for universities to teach. Try Python or Perl. Visual Basic is also a good place to start but it's too simple for in-depth projects. C++ is where I started but I don't recommend it unless you've had prior coding experience. Just toy around in the programming world first.
The key thing to realize here is that as an electrical engineer you can build the hardware and you know how the software will affect it. As a software engineer, you could write the software... but you'd need to rely on an electrical engineer for the hardware.
Software engineering does not require a degree. You can learn how to program using your home computer and the internet. Electrical engineering requires hands-on experience and lots of knowledge to prevent dangerous - sometimes fatal - accidents.
So I'd stay with electrical for now. Toy around with some programming languages in your spare time.
Good electrical design is more than delivering a system that works and much more than switching components on and off especially when controlled by PAC or PLC controllers. The designer needs to consider the following availability, efficiency and installation costs as a minimum in conjunction with functionality. Often circuits can be replicated on the principle of 'it isn't broke it don't fix it' however it may not be broke but could it be improved? Is always the attitude that should be taken when creating electrical designs? One important point to always consider is that the manufacturer's data sheet this will be key, and consulting component manufacturer is often essential, to ensure that electrical designs can meet the grade for CE marking.
When designing any system it is important to consider the system lifecycle of all components and the maximum availability without detriment to the equipment. Often there is more than one way to wire a component and in many cases this will not affect the overall performance, however this does not mean components should be thrown together, when considering a standard motor circuit containing a drive, contractor and circuit breaker. It would be possible to wire the system with the contractor before or after the drive, and both cases would work however the lifecycle of the drive will be significantly increased, by fitting the contractor prior to drive and if failure of a contractor was present could even cause damage the drive. The above is only one example of component general layout and manufactures best practice should always be considered right down to the recommended fixing torque. There are many other ways which will also increase availability; one such design would be thought the reduction of relays and replacement with solid state devices, as mechanical devices only withstand a maximum number of operations. There are many components on the market that will allow for more reliable switching.
Power quality is also an important consideration and the machine directive on EMC is a good starting point as odd harmonics, not only decrease component lifecycle but cause in efficiencies and in sever cases can result in hot neutral's where usefully power is feed directly to ground.
System inefficiencies can also be eliminated at the design stage, it is estimated that a poorly designed system can waste up to about 10% of the power consumed. Looking at the switching frequencies will determine the best switching method, often this is only a guide at design stage and it is important to evaluate all systems for energy consumption on a regular basis. Inefficiencies can also be minimised by switching of components when required, a control relay and PIR (Person in Room) may be seen as unessential component but could save thousand over the product lifecycle.
Using the same designer, panel builder and Installation Company is always a way of ensuring that the most efficient design is achieved, traditional methods have resulted in design and panel build by one contractor, PLC software development by another contractor and installation by another contractor. All of these different sources can be an excellent way of achieving the best rates on labour but often the design will not be the most efficient. If a system designer was in tight competition for a job he would often target the system hardware at a lower cost to get the job knowing full well that the cost of installation would be much higher. Selecting a principle contractor and allowing for them to subcontract will always result in an overall more efficient design which will best utilise all modern technologies in the full system. As the cost of copper increases and the cost of distributed control systems with remote I/O modules increase the full project should always be a major consideration.

Getting a Call from One of the Best Structural Engineering Companies
Presently, I just graduated from college with flying colors and that made both of my parents so proud and happy. Basically, college seemed like a roller coaster ride for me but the entire journey was a one of a kind experience. I have encountered so many difficulties along the way and they made me lose a grip of myself at times but I tried to hold and successfully, I was able to surpass everything. Days from now, I will be looking for job opportunities in different structural engineering companies for whatever position they can give me as long as it is related to my field.
As a structural engineering graduate, I am interested in designing buildings, bridges, roads, machineries, vehicles, equipments and other tools. I am responsible mostly for the analysis and designing of these structures and whatever items. In high school, I excelled in Physics and that made me take up this course. Everything just went well from then on although I must admit that there were times when things just did not go the way I wanted them to be but it no longer matters now.
I am quite aware that employment opportunities are limited nowadays but I am hoping to land a job as soon as possible in some reputable structural engineering companies perhaps. I believe that if I can make it there, I can develop myself more professionally. That is my ultimate dream but I am not aspiring to land a very big offer immediately. I know it is a lot of hard work so I will grab even lower positions first and it is up to me to turn that chance into something big. Nobody starts big instantly unless you are a very lucky person and you do not need to work hard to get what you want. In my case, I have to.
Everything that has happened to me is a wonderful blessing that I will forever be thankful for. Right now, I am not saying no to anything and I will always remain positive. This is the real world and I have to prepare myself for new discoveries and more twists and turns in my life and make each day more meaningful. I want to major in mechnical engineering with a minor in automotive repair or something. I want to get my major in mechanical engineering and try to get a job with Ford or GM. Well, I'm a senior Mechanical Engineer and am currently interning for my third term, so I have some personal experience of what Mech. Engineers can do. I am currently working in an industrial plant that makes plastic beads that other companies buy and mold into different things. The main thing I do is asset reliability. Basically, I make sure that equipment in the plant is working properly. If not I have to come up with a plan to either improve what is there or suggest buying new equipment. I have to take into consideration safety aspects, costs, how it affects the process, etc.
There are many other things Mech. Engineers can do at work. Here are some examples that I have from friends who have interned or are currently working:
- You can work in transportation (cars, planes, and even helicopter), creating new designs or improving old ones. You can also do testing on vehicles for their wear and reliability - You can work in an office building, creating drafts and technical drawings for equipment. - You can end up teaching Mech. Engineering classes in a University. - You can design certain things (for example file cabinets) and test the durability of that design by attempting to destroy it. - You can work in a plant that produces industrail pumps and sell/inform other plants about various products. It's harder than it sounds, because you have to be very knowledgable in knowing exactly what type of equipment that plant needs, as well as helping out with any troubleshooting that may occur. - You can work do research in specialized fields. For example, researching crystallography will help find the best materials to use in different applications. - You can work in power plants and nuclear plants. You can be an asset reliabity engineer at those plants. You can also be a process engineer, basically they know the process of the plant inside and out, and can help with any engineering projects.
That's just some of the things I can think of, but as you can tell, there are many different things you can do, and there will always be a need for mechanical engineering.

Well, you could study Elec.E in the undergraduate arena, which would earn you a Bachelors of Science. I am in my senior year of Electrical Engineering and I do not recommend double-majoring in anything, let alone the massive beast that is ME. However, if you are interested in both, you could study one in your undergraduate studies and pursue the other as a graduate degree.
