A day in the life of a fashion designer

Being a fashion designer is probably one of the most diverse and exciting professions imaginable. Every day is different, and every day brings a new challenge and a new adventure. It's definitely ‘life', rather than ‘work'. What's the average week like? Well, there's never an average week in fashion, but it will probably mean everything from designing new garments to being interviewed for a magazine, and from choosing models for a catwalk show to meeting with the buyers of a department store.

Designing a new collection usually occurs over time, drawing in different influences, and being broken up by other demands of the business. While fashion designers will usually spend time sketching out designs, and making notes about color and fabric, they'll also want to go shopping, to explore what's in the stores. Usually that means an opportunity for lunch with an assistant, to discuss how the collection is developing, or how it should develop. Or, if the designer is especially busy, lunch might mean meeting a business contact, discussing the look of a new website or promotional campaign, or being interviewed for a magazine – trust me, a lot happens at lunch.

Later, back at the studio, the designer will be fitting the newest garments on ‘fit models', making sure that they are comfortable and look hot. Working with the pattern cutter and assistants, the designer will want to make alterations, and will probably want to develop new garments from those that are working well – for example, designing an ankle-length skirt from a shorter one. The fashion designer will direct, while staff pin and tack the garments the fit model is wearing. Once the designer has chosen the fabric, it can be made up.

While the new collection is just getting underway, the previous collection might be about to hit the catwalk or the stores. If dozens or hundreds of boxes have arrived back for the garment manufacturer, they'll need to be checked over. Later, buyers can be met, and shown the collection.

If the fashion show is approaching, the fashion designer will be looking through dozens of models' books, and getting model agencies to send the selected few to the studio to see how they look in the flesh. A lot of designers will also have the models walk the length of the studio – in a kind of practice run – to make sure they have the right ‘presence' for the show. Once the designer has decided exactly which models to use, they will be back on the phone to the model agencies, as well as booking a photographer for the website, look book, and ad campaign. As anyone who's been around a successful fashion designer knows, all of this is going to happen while the designer's mobile phone is ringing off the hook, and other important meetings and events are arranged.

If you think all of this means never getting out of the city, think again. 1. Area of Focus

The first thing that you need to know about schools of this nature is that they are designed with everyone in mind, and that means people going into the program may have absolutely no experience. In my case, they asked for a portfolio of work as part of the admission process. So, if you are self-taught and eager to solidify your already existing knowledge, or a total beginner, this is a good choice for you. If, however, you have already completed a similar program, you may wish to take a new program merely to upgrade your skills (because the field of new media is always changing). If you can, it really, really, really helps if you take a freehand drawing course prior to learning how to draw using a computer.

2. Recognition

- Does the school participate in any graphical arts competitions?
- Have students accomplished anything of reknown in the industry?

3. Teachers

Trust me, this doesn't go without saying. The quality of your education will be directly related to the instructors. I have never encountered an instructor that wasn't immensely knowledgeable about the subject area. Of course, there is a big difference between knowing the subject area and being able to teach (that is, to convey that information, and manage students, answer questions, etc).

4. Job Placement

100% make sure that you get into a program that incorporates on-the-job experience. Or at least a practicum. This usually is 100 hours of real on-the-job experience and it is absolutely invaluable to your career.

5. Curriculum And Tools

You must assess whether the curriculum is relevant to you field of study. You may want to compare the curricula of different schools to see which offers the best form of education. As it so happens in my case, the administration did something they have never done before: changed the curriculum halfway through the program. The reasoning behind this was that the software we were scheduled to be instructed in would soon be discontinued on the Mac. It really pays off if you can see the facilities beforehand so you know what tools they are using. Don't just oogle at the computers, snoop around and see the programs directory and make note of what programs are installed, and if they are the latest versions.

6. Student to Teacher Ratio

Graphic design is kind of an industry that more or less demands personal contributions on every project. For this reason, you can't just be known as the photoshop guy, it is your responsibility to be well versed in a lot of different programs and techniques for creating stunning graphics and illustrations. And that means you will definately need one-on-one instruction, or at least the ability to stop the class in case you get lost. These programs are very fast-paced and if you don't make sure you fully understand concepts in the first semester you will get hopelessly lost - fast.

7. Accreditation

Accreditation means the school has passed a certain standards of educational quality. If you can, ask for literally one minute of the head departments time and find out a listing of companies that students have been hired into.

8. Cost

A full education in graphic design can cost anywhere from 13,000 to 16,000 dollars for an intensive one-year program (120 credits). The goal here is to find a university, college, or technical institute that is recognized internationally for excellence. Let's face it, Harvard University will look a lot better on your resume than Texas Community College. Three great recognized schools in are BCIT located in Vancouver Canada (Vancouver is the equivalent of Hollywood for graphic designers, web designers, and all new media experts), the Art Institute (with locations worldwide), and the Vancouver Film School (VFS) that has graphic design programs that are very specialized.

9. Scholarships

You might want to consider whether the design school you are looking at offers any scholarships. You also might want to know the terms to them too. Some schools offer scholarships based on academic performance. Some offer them based on art competitions they hold regularly. You should qualify for a national student loan either way, and repayment is extremely affordable.

How do I get a job as a set designer/builder?

I would love to have a job as a set designer/builder, both for entertainment venues (theaters, concerts) but also for conference venues (convention centers, etc.). I have experience in technical drawing, a degree in art, and quite a bit of construction experience. Any ideas for where to look for such jobs??

Get some experience at a small or community theater...perhaps even as a volunteer at first. Use that experience to get a paid position . Organize a portfolio of pictures of everything you do to use to get better and better jobs.

Take college courses in theater and in communications (radio/TV/cinema) that relate to your goal. They will probably call it "scenery and lighting" but it could be in "drama" or in "communications".

Find out who is in charge at a theater near you. Contact them and tell them about your interest and ask if you could come by when they have a project in progress to get some ideas. While there, interview them about their background and see if you might be able to recruit them on as an unofficial mentor.

Volunteer as an usher or a go-fer...anything to spend more time in the theater. Make connections, get advice.

look i'm in the same boat except i'm choosing year 11. Look ultimately choose something that will make you happy and will give you easy grades. But remember do things that you thing will set you up for later senior years. I'd take commerce (money matters), info and software tech (our world's evolving keep up), visual atrs (in every job you need a creative flare, it looks nice on your CV). Hope this helped.

is there an inexpensive or free home design software out there for a normal homeowner?

its just that I want to play around with some home design ideas with my house for a small addition, & I need some kind of basic program to use. Thanks!

I know they can be hard to find. I think Lowes has one on their website, I used it for a kitchen once, but it takes some patience. I have always done my design ideas in The Sims 2, because it is much more user friendly and quick. I never really get around to playing the actual game though. The only problem with this is sometimes the location of things isn't exactly where you want it, but it's a good way to get the idea of what you want to do.
