Autocad and engineering?

How essential is Autocad to engineering, particularly electrical engineering?

Should one learn how to also do mechanical drawing by hand or is it all software now?

Finally, what are some good books on beginner's Autocad?

You have touched on a special topic for me.

AutoCAD is widely used in many engineering disciplines. Electrical engineers use it a lot.

A good knowledge of manual drafting is helpful. There are some occasions where it is necessary, or sensible to use those skills.
I always have a difficult time convincing students of that.

Also, in my experience, the better an engineer, or designer knows the fundamentals of descriptive geometry (drafting) the better that they can communicate the design to the end user.

AutoCAD textbooks:

Mastering AutoCAD,
AutoCAD for Dummies (?)
AutoCAD a problem solving approach.

I have used the 1st & 3rd
