How to Animate a Spline

Splines are smoothing curves drawn between adjacent points on an object or drawing. The shapes of splines are often computed by a design program in real time, as the program's user plots the points for a design in two or three dimensions. Animating splines can take a number forms. One form involves making key frames of a mesh created from intersecting splines free 3d models.




Step by Step.





  • Create a new scene in your design application and select its line-drawing tool.

  • Navigate to the front orthographic viewport of your app and use the line tool to draw a square with eight vertices: upper left, left, lower left, bottom middle, lower right, right, upper right and top middle. (An orthographic view is the opposite of a perspective one: Its lines do not converge the further they extend from the viewer free 3d models.)

    Draw the vertices counterclockwise to ensure your app calculates the resulting face normals correctly. (Normals are the hidden vectors your app uses to shade the faces of objects.)

  • Enter the mode that allows manipulation of the object's vertices.

  • Select the tool that can connect existing vertices while also creating new ones as needed. Use this tool to connect the square's top and bottom vertices.

  • Use the tool from Step 4 to connect the square's left vertex and the center of the top-bottom edge--which is also the square's center. Then, connect the square center to the square's right vertex.

  • Navigate to an oblique view in a perspective viewport where you can easily see the square's center vertex and then select your app's tool to move vertices. Use this tool to pull the center vertex out away from the plane formed by the surrounding vertices.

  • Leave the vertex-editing mode for your app's whole-object editing mode. Locate the modifier for skinning, or creating a renderable surface from, a mesh made from spline curves. Then, apply that modifier to the square mesh free 3d models.

  • Verify that your wire mesh now appears as a smooth surface and then enter your app's mode for creating animation key frames.

  • Create a key frame for frame 1, then navigate to the 100th frame. Re-enter the vertex-editing mode and push or pull the square's center vertex a noticeable amount from its current position. Create another key frame.

  • Leave animation-creation mode and replay the animation. Notice the animated splines, in the form of the movement at the center of the surface you made from the square mesh. Play the animation in wireframe mode to better see the actual splines.

Get an old technical drawing text book (see your local library, people donate them and the library either sells them for a dime or throws them away). Learn to draw with a pencil and ruler. If you thought starting with a computer program was a good idea, it will only make you medeocre at best. Just as the PC makes it fast to type out a msg, it won't majically make you a good writer.
