Announcing Autocad ‘Inventor of the month' Competition

Well-known leaders in 3D design software, Autodesk who provide the Autocad series, have announced their latest competition, "Inventor of the year" which runs on from the "Inventor of the month' awards they have been running for the last year.

For 12 months, an inventor has been named ‘Inventor of the year'. All 12 individuals are now nominated for the latter part of the award, which will name the winner as ‘inventor of the year'. Autodesk will make their decision by a public voting process, whereby industry members visit the community website to choose their winning inventor.

So how did Autodesk choose their inventor of the month? Out of thousands of inventors, Autodesk recognised those who have created innovative design and advanced the engineering process using Autodesk Inventor software. The software helps engineers not only decide on the best visuals (in 3D) but actually also helps manufacturers understand how the product will work and how effective it will be, decreasing industry costs on prototypes. So Autodesk has invited the best in the industry to be awarded the ‘Inventor of the year' award by the 27th February 2011.

So what advancements may we see from these top inventors? An Aussie firm, voted in January, used Autocad software to design the largest construction recycling facility, which is capable of recycling around a million tons per year.

April's winner designed a wind turbine for use at home for the Danish market, making them one of the first companies to create wind turbines for a home market. June's winner also designs environmental solutions using Autocad, enabling businesses to cut down on money spent on energy and to produce energy themselves. A team of Stanford graduates also won October's award for their recyclable laptop.

Autodesk have also seen a variety of inventors, from chocolate companies to architectural woodworking firms, win the monthly prize. Each winner has contributed significantly to a different industry or field. Voting ends on the 27th February at 5pm Eastern time. So get your vote in whilst you can!

Why Sustainability Is Becoming a Consideration For Autocad Users

At the forefront of engineering and design is sustainable design. In the 21st century, engineers and designers have a number of problems to tackle and consider when creating designs, such as clean and green technology, which will make our world more sustainable.

In a world of finite resources, it has become a duty of the designer and Autocad user to formulate better design decisions, based on environmental knowledge and design practices. It will not only help to improve the output, but decrease the impact of our depletion of resources upon our environment and lifestyle.

To create longer lasting and environmentally friendly designs, a designer has to have the knowledge of sustainable design to inform his design decisions. He or she may for instance need to consider a number of elements before they complete a design, including:

Energy Efficiency:- This is one of the major considerations when it comes to sustainability. The designer to create a sustainable design must meet minimum energy, water and land efficiency goals or exceed them by creating carbon neutral building, use natural ventilation methods and the use of far more natural energy and heat production methods (i.e. solar gain, wind power, solar energy).

Retrofitting: -This is working with the building to create a design that may not alter just the looks but the decrease the environmental impact of the building, and in turn increase the value of a building.

Environmental impact: - By following the guidelines for habitat protection, conservation and biodiversity, designers can make informed decisions on how to avoid their designs having a huge environmental impact on wildlife. Furthermore, understanding environmental impact can help designers make decisions on how they can create designs that protect local water sources and the quality of them.

Designers also have to consider other environmental issues within their practice, such as recycling and reducing the impact of shipping and the use of paper, which can be done by using environmentally friendly transport, using email as the source of contact and as a way to transport project information.

So how is Autocad helping with sustainable design? Well, those geniuses down in the lab have created tools to help create sustainable designs, including tools to examine weather conditions, to realistically show the design in its environment, to incorporate GIS data that will help you avoid key protected areas, such as wetlands and identify options for renewable energy. To have access to these tools, you need to have a subscription to the software and have a paid for copy of Autocad.
