Use of 3D CAD Models in Architectural and Construction Industry

Use of 3-dimensional (3D) Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software has become essential in most design professions, including engineering, architecture, construction and branches that deal with the built world - past, present or future. While the 3D CAD models are of substantial importance, contextual files are often required to understand them correctly. For example, client presentations help clarify an architect's design goal as implemented by a model, so researchers looking at the 3D model need the context of the presentation to make sense of it.

2D drawings generated by tools like AutoCAD present many advantages since they are industry standards (DWG, DXF formats) and can be easily converted into other standard 2D formats such as PDF or JPG. For places in which 2D CAD is the best illustration of the object, standard formats and 3D CAD model strategies can reasonably be applied.

To show an edge shared by two similarly toned objects is to draw the line of the edge, even though the line isn't really there as it appears in the drawing. Drawing is much more a kind of codifying of reality than a faithful representation. We know that when a drawing contains a line, it can be the edge of an object or an edge shared by two objects. The edge of an object doesn't exist exactly as it's represented in the drawing, but because convention allows us to see a line on paper as the edge of an object, it works in practice.

Even for the most basic type of brochure, before you put pencil to paper or click your mouse, there is essential information that the client and designer had to discuss. The entertaining brochure is used the least. Designers need to get the parameters and specifications from the client before they proceed, as these may greatly affect the cost. Printers can also be a tremendous resource in explaining how a brochure's parameters and specifications will affect everything from the size of paper a brochure is printed on, to trimming, folding, and special cuts.




The graphic designer and client needs to discuss the order of information; starting with the most important and moving onto the least. At this stage, you will need to know on which panel or panels information is being placed. In some brochures, information can go across two panels to striking effect. Advertising, educating, informing, and entertaining are how that message is presented; the actual message is what you want to say about the particular product, service, or company. As with any design there are also things you will want to avoid. These include: Avoid over-used typefaces, two of which are Arial and Helvetica. For content type, keep the point size under 12. With any design project, it's a good idea to have all the necessary information, pictures, parameters, and specifications before you let your creative juices flow.
