Designing with 3D CAD Models

When products are designed using 3D CAD data, there are many benefits compared to using only 2D data.Technology, and the easy access we have to it has allowed us to gain the following benefits when designing:-




(1) We can directly import finished 3D data into maching centres, that enable us to produce a finished production ready component, straight from the computer. These allows us to evauate the design, or use it in a production situation. The data can also be used to machine tooling tooling dies that can be used in plastic moulding or die cast manufacturing industries.




(2) There many different CAD programmes to choose from when designing in 3D. Programmes like Solidworks, Inventor, Proengineer and Autocad, all have the capability to effectively produce excellent design data, and the formats they use, allow the reading of each others data files. This is good, as different programmes have strengths and weaknesses with the manipulation and processing of data.




(3) For visualisation of a design, the  data can also be used in the manufacture of rapid prototypes or 3D prints. The rapid prototypes can be used to help evaluate the design of a product, by checking the functionality and full movement when assembled, and for checking working part clearances. The aesthetics of the design can also be evaluated, as the rapid prototype is able to be held instead of only viewed on a computer screen. Once the design evaluation process is complete, tooling can then be machined from the data.




(4) Cost is a significant part of the design process, and significant savings can be achieved from evaluating a design in 3D. Once the design has been proven, and part clearances have been finalised, tooling can be machined from the data, which will give the correct sizes post manufacture. With older technology, and hand machining of tooling, there would be a need for modification to achieve correct sizing. Repeatability of sizing for multiple cavitation could also not be guaranteed, and this all added cost to the final design of the product.




With the use of 3D CAD design, cost reductions are achieved, and designs are bought to production quicker.
