is there a way to downgrade Autocad files to an older version without the newer version?

we use autocad 2000lt, but we are recieving more and more files in newer versions of autocad. we usually have to ask the sender to save it as a 2000 file but it isnt always possible to contact the sender. is there a program that we can get other than a newer version of autocad? at the moment we can pdf it with a viewer then use a pdf to dxf converter but it is a bit long winded and loses some of the information.

Please forgive me as a vent for 5 seconds.

For once I would like people to stop criticizing Autodesk long enough to actually do a little research.
