Is a tablet notebook necessary for an engineering student?

I am a high school senior going into Mechanical Engineering, and I was wondering if I should get a tablet notebook or a plan old regular laptop. I was just wondering because wouldn't it be easier for me to take notes and draw diagrams?

Tablet notebooks also make it easier to screw around and not pay attention to lectures. I would say they're not a necessity, unless you're minoring in graphic design or something of that ilk. Otherwise, a notebook with a pencil and ruler will suit your needs just as well.
