What type of engineer would design and make drawings for gadget type items?

Undoubtedly the Mechanical Engineers. There is this new approach called CAD-CAM (Computer Aided Design-Computer aided Manufacturing) that allows for drafting of the design on different 3D modeling softwares like ProEngineer, Autodesk Inventor etc... And it can further be analyzed for different type of loadings...like in ur case u might be interested to know wat will happed in case u drop your gadget...like the case with mobile phones...this and similar stuff can also be done using softwares such as ANSYS....

So in short its definitely Mechanical Engineers job
