What is the best, easiest to use, and/or cheapest vector-based computer graphics program on the market?

We are a small process engineering company, looking for a usefull program to generate illustrations for our product manuals. Our main drawing package is AutoCAD, but often AutoCAD drawings do not translate well into other Windows-based programs. I am familiar with Visio, Powerpoint, Publisher, but have never tried Adobe Illustrator. Any thoughts on a good, user-friendly vector-based program that won't bust our limited budget? Thanks!

Er. there's no such program as Macromedia Illustrator - wires are seriously crossed there! And Fireworks is a pixle manipulator, like Photoshop, so that would be no help to you.

The questions you need to ask yourself do not revolve around cost - there is relatively little in it. The answer lies in the kind of work you are doing - if it's text based I'd say have a look at Corel Draw which comes with the best 'real-time' font navigator I've ever experienced. The shortfall of Corel is that it has a narrower appeal and therefore less documentation and web tutorials. if it's pure graphics go for Illustrator which has a mass of documentation and web related stuff.

We are a design company just outside London and we have used Corel Draw for all our graphics. It has excellent text capabilities and exports in most file formats. In addition, Corel Draw 11 is dual platform (Mac and PC) which benefits us greatly.

Illustrator is the industry standard - mainly because of its compatibility with other members of the Adobe family. It exports generic files (AI, EPS, PDF) that will open in all other vector based programs and some bitmap applications (especially Photoshop).

The other entrant is Freehand by Macromedia (just bought out by Adobe). This has become popular with Mac users but, due to the takeover, this program may well die out or be merged with Illustrator in future versions.
