Any advice on how to convert my mini lathe to cnc?
Hello, I uderstand the basic needs, step motors, controller, break outs boards and software...But there are so many variable that I'm getting confused as to what would work the best. Has any body done this? How do I get the ball rolling?
Two suggestions:
1. Buy all your hardware from 1 supplier, e.g.

and make sure they understand it is their responsibility to supply compatible components.
2. Spend some time on researching the software (preferably from the same supplier) and hardware requirements. Older software made use of PC parallel port printer outputs that simply do not exist on modern PCs. Indeed, older software simply would not run in a Windows environment. Make sure that your PC hardware and the software are compatible. Remember that you either have to write the programs to do particular jobs yourself, or you have to design the parts in a CAD program and then import the files into your CNC program (possibly via a third program).
You may find the quotes expensive, but against the cost of your time and frustration, you may find them worthwhile after all.
