Any good free graphic design software out there?

Hi, I'm looking for a simple graphic design software that I can get free.
I just want to make some image (jpg/gif) for my web page project. I don't have Adobe Illustrator on my laptop and I'm just lazy to go school just to use Illustrator on the school computers..

Any good software that you can recommend me?

Best one out there is Gimp. Lots of Photoshop-type features, and it's open source software (free). With lots of tutorials and documentation on Youtube and other locations on the net... Link for download for mac and PC below...
