what software do you guys recommend if I wanted to get into graphic design.. ?

Many different programs do a variety of design tasks...
Adobe Photoshop - photo retouching
Adobe Illustrator - graphics creation
Adobe InDesign - page layout and design
Quark XPress - page layout and design

I would recommend just getting the Adobe Creative Suite:
