Art and drawing software such as Photoshop?
After going through the trials for various versions of Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter and Paint Shop Pro, I've really fallen in love with both Photoshop and Painter.
I'm illustrating a children's book currently and need a digital art program. Are there any programs out there that combine features of Photoshop and painter for a smaller price tag? As, since it's a hobby not a job for me, photoshop is too expensive at just over £600!
I would need something equivalent to the pen tool in photoshop and/or the hard paintbrushes for drawing, but for the colouring and backgrounds I find that the variety of real media presets in painter are the best.

Unfortunately there really aren't any programs that do precisely what you'd like to do. A lot of digital artists actually use a combination of Photoshop and Painter, as you have already discovered.
I can suggest a few things to look into. There is a cheaper version of Photoshop that you might consider, and that's Photoshop Elements, which will cost probably around £70 (based on a retail price in the US of about $100). Version 8 of Elements has just been released, for both Mac and PC.
There is also the free, open source image editor called the Gimp. It is the closest to full Photoshop of any of the free image editing programs. It does have a different interface, so can take a while to learn, but there's a huge community of users with forums and groups that can help you learn how to use it, and there are a few books available too. You can find that at http://www.gimp.org.
Another thing you might want to look into is a vector drawing program. Vectors allow you to create hard lines, among other things (the pen tool in Photoshop comes for Adobe Illustrator's pen tool; Illustrator is a vector drawing program). They also have the big advantage of being resolution independent: you can resize them with no loss of quality. There is a free, open source vector drawing program called Inkscape. You can find it at http://www.inkscape.org.
I don't know of any free program that comes close to what Painter does.
