about engineering drawing
a question about structural engineering? (you will probably help more if you are a structural engineer)?

hey I am 13 years old and I am really interested in structural engineering... I draw alot of buildings and stuff and I'm especially interested about how buildings are supported... I want to get abit more serious about it... Like i want to start sketching up real buildings (ones that might be able to actually be built) but I don't know any mathematic formulas or what ever about how much wight steel can hold at what angle and how much steel, concrete, brick, etc. would be needed or not needed to hold up a building... any tips? also how do you get into a job in structural engineering (i want to make atleast 100,000 dollars a year when I'm older because it would rock to have a job where i have some fun and also get paid lots.

Hi
I am a civil engineer, and although I don't design structures, I have taken the courses and it is part of the work I do.

Unfortunately, you are a ways away from being able to understand the principles and equations necessary. My recommendation would be to buy an architecture book. But in a few years, you will take physics which is where the process starts. You need to understand statics and dynamics VERY well. Buildings and bridges are subject to static and dynamic loads.

As for salaries, that's a tough one to estimate. By the time you take your first job, a starting engineer would be in hte 40-50k range, subject to where you are located and whom you work for. Large corporations in big cities pay more, but the cost of living is higher.

But good luck, feel free to ask me any other questions any time.
