Benefits of Using Solidworks Modeling for Detailed 2D Drawings

Author: Prahlad Parmar

SolidWorks software is an excellent tool to model complex product components and assemblies facilitating creation of 3D interactive models that are amazing in size and complexity. But as a result of this 3D proficiency, drawing capabilities of SolidWorks have gone unnoticed to deliver results easily and quickly.

Solidworks is handful tool for many engineers, designers and draftsmen to automatically generate and maintain production-level drawings with efficiency. It allows creation of a complex lofted surface so that once you have finished modeling your design, multiview drawings are just clicks away, BOMs can be produced automatically from the assembly structure and various position views can be obtained with a simple drag of the mouse.

Once you begin making certain changes in the design, you don’t have to locate every drawing linked to your product design and update each of them by hand like you do in a 2D system. When you use SolidWorks any modification in the model, automatically updates every view in each drawing.

SolidWorks simplifies generation of all the documentation needed for product design and adds an adhesive to bind all of them together. Whether the design alterations are as small as addition of a sharp border or as large as swapping motors, all drawings will be updated automatically to show the design change.

SolidWorks comes with a customized tool called eDrawings that make it easy to share 2D and 3D design concepts via email. During the process one can send eDrawings back and forth and work together in real time via email without having a meet with the supplier.

SolidWorks can be used to automatically generate interface and manufacturing drawings from the 3D solid model. Since SolidWorks drawings are based on this model, producing detailed and auxiliary views is really easy as opposed to a simple 2D package. Because 2D packages offer no automation, every view is made by hand resulting in up to 90% more time consumption then it is required with SolidWorks for producing detailed drawings.

In conclusion SolidWorks helps you generate detailed drawings faster, better and more easily. Even if you do not need elaborate 3D stuff, SolidWorks is still a good option for 2D production. And the fact that it is the most easy to learn 3D software available in the market makes it a viable option for SME companies.
