What is the best kind of 3D game design (not editing) software?

I am looking into getting some 3D game design software so I can create my own games. I have Maya 2008, but I want to expand further. I was looking at Dark Basic, but I would like more input to add on to that.

An excellent 3d game authoring tool would be DX Studio.

It allows you to start designing games right away. Costs involved are VERY low: a non-commercial license is about $90. You can take the knowledge you have of Maya, and apply that immediately in DS Studio. Programming is done through a Javascript language that is easy to learn.

If you like, a fully functional version is available to test the system.
